Q: CAN I SEE THE ANGKOR CUSTOMIZABLE ITINERARY?
When tailoring your temple run, consider how to balance the following:
Pace: Choose whether you want a packed schedule to hit all the icons, or a relaxed approach where you return to the hotel during the midday heat.
Walking Load: Some temples require a lot of stair climbing and uneven walking (e.g., Angkor Wat, Baphuon, Ta Keo). You can ask your guide for flatter, easier routes.
Crowd Avoidance: Request a reverse loop for the “Small Circuit” (starting at Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei or Ta Nei instead of Angkor Wat) to stay a step ahead of tour buses.
Most visitors building a customized itinerary from scratch prioritize these iconic sites:
• Angkor Wat: Best experienced at sunrise from the reflection pools, or in the late afternoon when the crowds thin out.
• Bayon (Angkor Thom): Famous for its 216 giant smiling stone faces.
• Ta Prohm: The iconic “Tomb Raider” temple where massive silk-cotton and banyan tree roots intertwine with the ruins
• “Off the Beaten Path” Additions
To make your trip unique, swap out some of the secondary ruins on the standard Grand Circuit for these:
• Banteay Srei: A bit further out, but features some of the most intricate pink sandstone carvings in the complex.
• Preah Khan: A massive, flat, and often less-crowded jungle temple that is highly rewarding for photography.
• Phnom Bakheng or Pre Rup: Ideal spots to watch the sunset over the Cambodian jungle and rice paddies.
• Essential Practicalities
• Pass Strategy: Pick the right pass for your plans. The 3-Day Pass ($62) is the sweet spot for a customizable itinerary, as you can spread your days out over a 10-day period and avoid temple fatigue
• Non-Temple Additions: You can easily spend an afternoon away from the ruins by adding stops like the Angkor National Museum, a boat tour on the Tonlé Sap Lake to see floating villages, or an evening performance at Phare Circus
